Bathroom Remodel

With Baby Hartgrove arriving soon, we decided that our master bathroom remodel needed to occur sooner than later, as we did not want a bunch of hammering, paint and repair men in our home while we were sleep deprived with a newborn!  It was a project we knew we needed to do when we bought our new home and wanted to get it done as fast as possible. Our family repair guy was able to get it started and projected it to be done in 1-2 weeks. We are now at 1.5 weeks and he is almost done!

BEFORE:

Basically, our bathroom began with the original peach tile from 1955 and is a single shower bathroom.  The shower itself was super low, about 6 feet tall and tiny! It felt like you were in a cave when you took a shower in there and the floors, and counter tops were made from the same tile, in addition to just having 1 sink.  The cabinets had been painted brown before we moved in and new light fixtures that the previous owners installed, but it still did not help with the updating it needed.

PROGRESS:
We decided to go with basic travertine for the floor and shower and granite for the counter tops.  We also decided to expand the shower by taking out a hall closet on the other side to make it wider and then expanded the ceiling to make it taller. I have to say I am super proud of Todd who took over the project due to my work schedule. He went out and picked out the granite and travertine himself as well as the toilet, shower head, faucets and sinks and got really involved with the details. He wanted a more modern look and chose rectangular sinks. He then had our contractor design the cabinets with dark wood and chose brushed nickel fixtures to match the sink (he spent 10 hours online trying to find the right match).  He has also been busy taking all of the old interior doors and installing new updated ones for our bathroom and hall doors.

We are trying to get the house ready for the baby and modernized so we can focus all our energy on the baby and not have too much stress.  Our last projects may have to wait for a weekend as they are not as involved as the master bath and won't take as long. We need to add a nice jacuzzi bath tub for the guest bath (I am a bath freak and really want one to relax after baby arrives!) and also adding an oven as the one we have is circa 1955! I will update everyone on our new bathroom as soon as it is complete!

So we just moved into our new home and this is a quick picture of our new crib in the nursery- we have a theme of pink, white and black going on- Todd is freaking out at all the pink so the black is a nice accent :) They finished painting it and it has pink and white stripes on the walls- more pics to come!

I now have 4 weeks left! So far, things are well.  I had my baby check up a few days ago and they rechecked my blood for iron levels and I am on track and doing well.  I've gained a total of 27 pounds, so not so bad, but they are telling me to watch my carb intake and refined sugars, darn they are my favorite!

I attended a La Leche meeting as recommended by our birth instructor last week and it was really interesting. I was thinking it was some hard core breast feeding nazi group as others had described, but it was a really nice laid back group of girls in Lakewood discussing different topics and new moms talking about their different concerns from breastfeeding, to sleeping to colicky babies.  They also have a play group in the area I might join later on.

We attended our 7th birthing class this past week and learned about aromatherapy during labor and practiced our birthing positions.  We also learned about all the fun stuff that happens to our bodies after we give birth, and I won't go into detail but let's just say I wish I could have an out of body experience at that point, but hopefully I will be so distracted by our new baby that I won't notice..lol...Our last class is next week and we are going to learn all about the Happiest Baby on the Block and swaddling.  We are so glad we took these classes as we are now a lot less anxious about all the baby stuff coming our way!

I can't believe I am now 34 weeks pregnant! It is getting closer and the most exciting news we have is that  we found a house to move into before the baby comes!!!  It is our first home to buy together, no more renting! We didn't make it to Austin as planned before the baby comes (still wanting to do that a little later). We moved a little further north of our Lakewood home, over to the north side of White Rock Lake off NW Highway and Audelia in a nice old 1950's style neighborhood.  It was the first house our realtor friend Rene showed us one day and we knew it would be hard to beat as it had most of the things we were looking for.  Most importantly it had a 3rd bedroom for our baby, and a second bathroom! Although we are no longer in the Lakewood /M Streets area that we had lived in (since I had moved back from Dallas), we are happy to be closer to Central Dallas and 5 minutes from the new Whole Foods complex and Northpark Mall.

It was a HUGE challenge to move in so pregnant as the movers and Todd did the heavy lifting, but as a pregnant woman, I did not have the energy or the capability to move as I always have in the past. I so wanted to do more but my body kept telling me 'no'. It was super nice for my family to come over and help unpack and bring dinner for a couple of days. By Friday my feet were killing me and I had my first foot swelling episode which I have yet to have during this pregnancy. I thought for sure I was having Preclamsia but the internet and my 10 books on pregnancy (yes, I have a book addiction thanks to Borders) reassured me that I should be okay for now and to just elevate my feet. Needless to say I had to miss going to dinner with our friend Maria that night as she was in town for a short trip from San Fran.

As far as the pregnancy is going, all is good so far.  Stlll having back aches and found a great Chiropractor my midwife suggested and she treats pregnant women.  I am on track with my measurements, but gained a little more than I was hoping for  so far at 26 pounds, but as long as I am in the recommended weight gain of 25-35 pounds total I will be good.  My midwife does not want me to gain too much as it could cause a large baby that would make it difficult to have naturally.  I figure a little weight is better than too little to help support the baby and to help prevent pre-term labor as it's been kinda scary with other girls I know having preterm labor symptoms, as most of the girls in my birthing class have been put on moderate bed rest and are about as far along as I am and makes me realize I need to take it easy so I don't end up like them. Our Birth Center can deliver babies starting at week 36 so I have 2 more to go until it is safe to deliver there.

We had our mandatory Birth Center meeting on Saturday and they discussed all the items we need to bring, what could cause us to have to go across the street to Baylor Hospital, when to call the midwives when going into labor, etc. Basically they said about 10% of first time moms are transported to Baylor for complications or failure to progress but it was nice to hear our Birth Center has the lowest C-section rate in the country and they try to avoid them at all costs!  Sometimes you just have to let nature take its course and it may not be the birth we dreamed of but as long as the baby and baby mama are healthy is all that matters!

One other new discovery we have decided on is our possible birth plan as we watched several natural water births in our class and saw how much more calm the mothers who delivered in the jacuzzi tub were and we think we may go that route. At least we want to try it out because whatever is easier on the mom will be easiest on the baby!  If not, there are about 20-30 different positions we may try at the center and will just have to see how it goes.  We are also going to birth appts every 2 weeks now, going on pediatrician interviews and starting the La Leche meetings so I will keep you all posted on all the changes as it gets closer.
