Luna had a great time this week with lots of play dates! We went to Miss Jenny's for a music class at her house on Wednesday. Luna's favorite part was the ball pit! BUT, the MOST exciting thing that happened this week was the birth of baby Mila Kahale. My long time friend Carmen and her husband Mish had their baby girl on the 23rd!!! So excited for them!! Poor Carmen had a tough time as she was on bed rest for high blood pressure, so we were so glad baby Mila and mom are healthy and had a good birth! Thursday night Todd put Luna to bed and I captured a cute picture of him reading Luna her night time story, Goodnight Moon! Friday morning Luna and I headed out to her first Chick Fil A Friday playdate. Some of her friends and their mommas head out to Chick Fil A for bfast on Fridays because they have such a great indoor playscape area and of course their food is awesome. Chicken biscuits, burritos and bagels. Yum. But we just haven't made it there before, since we weren't up in time or able to get out the door at 8:30am! But we made it this Friday and Luna loved crawling around on the playground. The staff at the Caruth location are so nice, they bring your tray to your table as they can see how our hands are full with diaper bags, kids and high chairs! Luna loved wearing her PJ's out. After lunch and a nap we had another play date with her friend Tinsley at Fuzzy Tacos. Two restaurants in 1 day! We had a nice relaxing weekend and spent sometime outdoors playing in the front yard as I tried to pry the leaves out of Luna's mouth! We also went to an Oscar party Sunday night. Michelle and Brad had an awesome spread of popcorn, movie candy and treats. Of course we had to leave early since Luna goes to bed at 7:30pm but we had a good pre-party!

Todd and I celebrated his birthday Sunday night at Javier's Restaurant and had a great time! Thanks mom for babysitting for us!!! The next day, Luna and I met our friend Maria who was visiting from San Francisco and our friend Karen for lunch at Cafe R + D. Luna loved visiting with her Auntie Maria! We then made a visit to the neighborhood park to see Luna's friends Ella Grace, Jack and Clay. Luna LOVES the swings! She is hanging on for dear life! And hates it when I stop the swing and it's time to leave the park. She gets soo upset it's cute. Yesterday, I took Luna to a playgroup with the LHAECPTA groups and she had a lot of fun! Then we went down to half price books to sell some of my dad's old record albums. 100$! Amazing what 2 old boxes of records will earn after all these years!
Wow, I can't believe how the week just flew by! After Luna's 9 month check up on Tuesday, we spent the next day at the Arboretum with her Daddy on his day off. Great weather, a little cloudy but a nice 70 degrees. Luna also went to her neighborhood playgroup on Wednesday but this time we went to Miss Jenny's house for her new music playgroup. She's hosting a weekly group for all of us to play musical instruments, sing songs and dance! Luna also goes to Kindermusik class on Thursdays and LOVES it!! I wish I had a picture of her there, but we're not allowed to take pictures during class. But she has 5 other friends in the class and a great teacher. We play drums, bells, and shakers as well as learning gross motor development skills. It's a great bonding experience for us and Luna loves seeing the other babies. We then met an old high school friend of mine, Joanna, at Abbott park who just had her second baby Freddy. It was more of a mommy get together with other new moms as Luna just sat there as we all talked :) Abuelo Richard was in town too and stopped by to see little Luna! She always has a smile on her face when she sees him. We had a great time visiting with him and hope to see him again soon!
Luna had her 9 month check-up today and passed with flying colors! Here are her stats: Height: 27.5 inches (50% and nearing needing a new car seat and graduating from the infant Chicco seat) Weight: 17.10 pounds (30%) Head: 44 cm (50%) We filled out a development questionnaire and Dr. Deuber thought Luna was doing great! She also had her iron checked and was a 11.4 (11-14 is normal) so I need to keep taking my prenatals and continue her iron fortified cereals. Luna had her Hep B shot, I had avoided it as I did not think she needed it per Dr. Sears, MD until she was 2 years of age, but Dr. Deuber thought she needed it and she didn't have any more shots today, so I agreed to have them inject the poor thing! I had a bad reaction to it when I was 18, so I was nervous but so far she has been okay. Dr. Deuber also recommended child proofing as much as we can, and to start putting her in a playpen now, so that when we need to really use one, she doesn't see it as punishment (like when we have to run to the bathroom and put her down somewhere) Here is a short recap on her development: -Still breastfed about 5-6 times a day (in 24 hours) -Sleeping from 7pm-7am and wakes up 1-2 times at night, still trying to wean off those night feedings -Rocking on all fours, and crawling backwards -She loves rocking back and forth to music -Babbling a lot, and has said mama and dada but was not towards us, darn! Maybe next month! -She loves her farm toys, and all music/light up toys, as well as her Pretzel Dachshund -Wearing 6-9 months clothing still but more of a 9 month old now -Loves going outside and swinging in her pink swing- cries when we take her inside -She loves, loves her Kindermusik class, especially the part when she is dancing and cries when we have to sit down -Still takes a pacifier at night -Her favorite foods are Yo Baby Yogurts, Mangoes, Peas/carrots, butternut squash, egg yolks and avocado After Luna's big doctor's appt, she got to take a nice bubble bath with her mommy! Her first time with Bubbles, and we used California Baby, since it's non-toxic. She ended up eating a bunch of them :) Later that day, Todd and I celebrated Vday at home and I cooked us a nice Lobster dinner with Risotto. The first time we did not go out for the holiday, but it was so nice to be at home! Yum!
Luna celebrated her first Valentine's Day today!! And what better way than with her neighborhood friends, Alex, Jack, Clay, Addison and Ella Grace! Alex's mom, Leigh Ann, hosted a Valentine's Party at her house. We all brought 2 dozen cookies and a brunch entree. Needless to say we were all stuffed and needing to hit the gym afterwards! The babies had a blast playing in Alex's playroom and seeing all of their Valentine treats. The best part was when we tried to get them to stay still for a picture. The crawlers tried to escape and the walkers just sat there crying to get up! Luna of course is still not actively crawling, so she sat there watching all of the chaos :) All Luna wants is to eat her Valentine card! Yum food! Cookies! (thanks for the photo Heather :) My little Valentine!
Luna had a nice visit from her grandfather David and my step-mom Sherry this weekend! We did the whole Northpark thing and Luna had a great little shopping excursion and we came home with some precious new dresses, including one for Valentine's Day! Then we all went out to eat at Cyclone Anayas for some yummy Mexican food. Luna downed the avocado like it was going out of style! The next day was just beautiful!! 70 degrees in Dallas after our 20 degree weather was a nice change. Luna and I went for a nice walk in the neighborhood. As soon as Luna's daddy got home, I was off for a girls night out! Luna's playgroup mommas got together for the first time WITHOUT the babes and went to X 10 Cellars in Lakewood for wine and cheese and then for dinner across the street at the Cock and Bull. I got home at 12:30am!! It was so much fun and I have not stayed out that late since I think before I got pregnant!
Luna went to her weekly playgroup today sporting a gift from her Aunt Sherry. Yes, she is wearing skinny jeans and a matching sweater. Too precious! Skinny jeans on a 5 year old are a little much, but on an infant, they are just adorable! They have a little sewn on pearl necklace and cameo on the front pocket. Oh yes, in the bottom photo I think she is voguing.
Luna had a fun weekend filled with parties! First off was her friend Jillian's first birthday party. Jillian is our next door neighbor and was born February 3rd. She had a cute owl themed party with yummy cupcakes. She had a ton of fun playing with all of the other babies! Jillian and her Grandma Jillian and her Smash Cake! Luna's boyfriend Jack The next day was Superbowl Sunday. And for those that don't know, it was hosted in our city, Dallas!! It has been crazy here with the crowds and events around town. So to celebrate the event, we headed downtown to our friend Karen's loft for a party. Luna was wearing her Green for the Green Bay Packers!
Luna was the only baby at the party so she got A LOT of attention and loved every minute of it! It was great to see our friends and had a great time. Of course by halftime, she was ready for bed so we headed home to watch the rest of the game. Awh, what can I say about sleep and babies? Most all babies sleep 'like a baby' as they fall in and out of sleep all day and night long. Not much will wake them up, slamming a door, walking loudly or even yelling right next to them- they will sleep right through it. Luna was a good sleeper like this from the day she was born, and was sleeping 3-4 hours a night, sometimes 5 but as time went on, she was having less stretches of sleep and was waking up at the drop of a needle.
So the first 6 months we kept Luna in our room in her bassinet co-sleeper because Dr. Sears said the risk of SIDS is lower if they sleep in the same room as the mom. That was enough to scare me, plus it was so sweet to have her so close, because there won't be another time when I can do that with her and pretty soon I won't even be able to rock her anymore :) The move to her crib was hard, as I slept on a mattress on the floor for 1 week next to her crib to get her used to sleeping in it. She still was very hard to put down and even though the doctor said no swaddle past 4 months, we started it again at 6 months and she slept soo well with it! But by 12am, Luna would wake up and not want to go back into the crib, and I was too tired to fight it, so I would bring her into my bed and nurse her and she would fall asleep next to me. Problem is that I did not sleep well with a baby next to me, tossing and turning all night, crying to be fed here and there. I was getting maybe 1 hour uninterrupted at a time. After searching for an answer, and reading Healthy Sleep Habits, Solve Your Child's Sleep by Dr. Ferber and the No-Cry Sleep Method as well as Dr. Sears' Baby Sleep Book, I was convinced the Dr. Sears book was the best, but was just not working. His idea is to Co-Sleep but if you can't do that, to use the No-Cry Method which was not working. You basically get them to almost drift off to sleep but put them in the crib not asleep, have them cry, re-rock, cry, re-rock, etc and it just was not working. It was taking us 30 minutes to put her to bed or naps and it was so hard to get her down, and she would not stay asleep for long at all. We would rock for hours and if she was not completely dead asleep when we laid her in the crib, she would awake hysterically and we would have to start all over again. Everyone I asked said I had to have her cry it out. But I was just not ready to do that. I could not bare to have her cry for over 5 minutes as they suggested. I knew she would cry herself to sleep but I felt that it was too mean! That she would think that her cries were unanswered and that no one could hear her, and that if no one answered her, then she would not trust the environment. After all, their only way to communicate was to cry and if no one heard them, ugh, the poor thing!! PLUS, when she was 4-6 months old, her cry was so hard to hear, it was like a newborn cry and it was too much for me to hear. And, I wanted to wait until she was old enough to understand a little bit when I told her it was time to go to bed. And 4 months, she was just not there yet. But after she turned 8 months, she was waking up more and more and by 10pm she was refusing to sleep in her crib and each night the time get earlier and earlier and I felt like she was regressing and would only sleep in my bed. So I found the Sleep Easy Solution book, which is a good straightforward approach similar to Dr. Ferber's method but written by moms and therapists. I bought a video monitor, a soft small breathable blankie and we decided to give this approach a try. So we finally tried it on Tuesday and she cried for 5 minutes, but was more of a mad cry, then I went in and calmed her but did not pick her up. She then cried for almost 7 minutes, but would start and stop, then Todd went in and calmed her. Then she cried for a minute, stopped for almost 6 minutes, cried for a second, stopped, etc and we NEVER had to go back into her room because she finally fell asleep!! And stayed asleep for 4 hours. Then I went into her room and fed her while she was asleep as the book suggested, and then I fed her again at 12am and 2am while she slept. The book said to wake them before they normally do to feed so that they do not wake themselves and eventually they will stop feeding at night. The next day, she went down with her naps sooo easily!!! She loves her blankie and soothes herself to sleep with it. We have only had to let her cry for 5 minutes here and there when she wakes up in her crib, but she quickly goes back to sleep. I miss our snuggle mornings in my bed, so when she is fully awake in the morning, I still bring her into my bed but we play and do not go back to sleep- I don't want her to get back into that habit!! I miss her sleeping next to me but I know it is for the best for my sleep and for her sleep. She is now taking longer naps too, because of the good sleep she is getting at night. Long post I know, and not any pics but I just had to let everyone know how well she is sleeping!! Of course in a few years we will look back on this and it will be just a small memory, but so glad her sleep has improved! Dallas has basically been closed since 1/31/11 as the schools have been closed since Tuesday and Luna and I have not been out since! Yesterday, Todd's friend Kevin and his niece Reese stopped by to visit. He's in town to go to the superbowl and were glad he was able to get out in this weather to pay us a visit. We have not seen Kevin since we last visited him and his wife Jenny in New York City when I was 4 months pregnant! We woke up to 5 inches of snow this morning! After being home for the past 3 days, today the city was again shut down and luckily Todd didn't have to go in to work. We were able to have another nice family day. Even though we are having cabin fever, at least Todd was home to be with us. Luna loved, loved, loved the snow and cried when I brought her back inside. We just know she is going to be a future little miss snowboarder.
